  • Chimamanda, Marie-Elena John arrive for Creative Writing Workshop

    Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nigeria’s wave making novelist and Antigua’s Marie-Elena John, the author of the critically acclaimed novel; Unburnable, have arrived Nigeria for the International Creative Writing Workshop sponsored by the Fidelity Bank Plc.

    The multiple award winning novelist arrived Lagos on Tuesday morning straight from the United States of America where she had just rounded off her master’s degree in African History at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

    Marie-Elena, the Caribbean who arrived Lagos Friday afternoon has always been passionate about Africa in general and Nigeria in particular as her work with the African Development Foundation, a World Council of Churches programme, ensured that she worked in close contact with pro-democracy campaigners who worked for Nigeria’s current democratic experience.

    The Antiguan writer made history in 1986 as the first black valedictorian of City College, New York but was to become better known several years letter when her debut novel, Unburnable was named “Best Debut of 2006” by Black Issues Book Review.

    Chimamanda and Marie-Elena are two of the four world renowned writers that shall teach aspiring writers the basic lessons in creative writing at a Fidelity Bank sponsored workshop that will open in Lagos on Tuesday, August 19, 2008.

    Other writers that will teach the workshop include American Dave Eggers, Pulitzer- finalist and author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Binyavanga Wainaina, Kenya’s most potent literary voice of the new generation.

    The workshop will hold in Lagos and Owerri, Imo State respectively.
